Southern Queensland's Success Story: Supporting Inclusive Employment

Jeffery Rogers Finds His Place in the Workforce with BEST Employment’s Assistance
Southern Queensland has seen a remarkable story of determination and inclusivity unfold as Jeffery Rogers, a motivated individual with an intellectual disability, achieved his goal of meaningful and independent employment with the support of BEST Employment, a registered Disability Employment Services (DES) provider.
Overcoming Challenges Together
Initially, assisting Jeff with his employment ambitions presented several challenges. With his nominee and family support system living three hours away, direct communication proved difficult. BEST Employment collaborated with Jeff’s NDIS coordinator to streamline communication and ensure all stakeholders were kept informed.
To help Jeff achieve his dream of becoming a barista in the hospitality industry, BEST arranged and funded his enrolment in a barista course at TAFE QLD. This training laid the foundation for his entry into the workforce.
The Journey to Employment
Jeff was initially placed in a café role through BEST Employment with the aid of a wage subsidy. Although this position eventually ended, it gave Jeff the confidence to pursue other opportunities. BEST supported Jeff through an application process with McDonald’s, where a job coach accompanied him to the interview and explained, with his consent, the additional support Jeff might need during training.
Despite McDonald’s choosing to forgo the wage subsidy or on-shift support offered by BEST, Jeff was offered a position and began his training. However, initial rosters included early mornings and late finishes, which created stress for both Jeff and his nominee.
Instead of stepping away from the DES program, Jeff showed determination to continue working in hospitality. BEST initiated collaborative meetings with Jeff’s NDIS coordinator and support manager to address transportation, shift scheduling, and other commitments. This proactive collaboration resulted in a revised roster that better suited Jeff’s needs, enabling him to thrive in his new role.
A Story of Pride and Success
Jeff has now been employed with McDonald’s for over a year, earning praise and appreciation from his team. His independence and hard work have significantly added to his personal confidence and happiness.
This success has been made possible through the comprehensive support offered by BEST Employment’s DES program, which focuses on identifying individual strengths, managing challenges, and providing training and post-placement support.
For Jeff, the past year has been transformational, proving that with the right support, individuals with disabilities can achieve meaningful employment and make invaluable contributions to their workplace.
