A participant in BEST Employment’s Disability Employment Services (DES) program overcame significant challenges to achieve career stability, thanks to tailored support and collaboration with key stakeholders.

The participant initially faced barriers caused by a change in management at her workplace. After her hiring manager was promoted, the new manager was unaware of the participant's transport challenges and rostered her for shifts she could not attend. This led to a reduction in hours and the assumption that her eligibility for Centrelink benefits negated the need for regular shifts.

To address these issues, BEST Employment arranged a joint meeting between the participant, her new manager, and her Job Coach. During the meeting, the participant's transport barriers were discussed, and the new manager explained that reduced shift availability was due to her taking on operational responsibilities. A solution was reached to offer the participant shifts at the employer’s Robins Kitchens store across town, on the condition that sufficient notice was provided to arrange transport. The participant agreed to the arrangement.

Additionally, BEST Employment partnered with the participant’s support worker, Zandie, to provide holistic assistance. This included transport support to get to and from work as well as to medical appointments when needed.

The result was a successful outcome for the participant, who achieved stable and consistent employment. She met 4, 13, and 26-week milestone outcomes through her perseverance and the collaborative effort of all parties involved. Feeling confident in her role, the participant opted to exit the DES program prior to reaching the 52-week milestone, as she no longer required support.

Since leaving the DES program, the participant has contacted BEST Employment with positive news—she is now undergoing training to become an Assistant Store Manager.

BEST Employment’s DES services continue to empower individuals with tailored support, helping them overcome challenges and build meaningful careers. If you or someone you know requires assistance in finding and maintaining employment, BEST Employment is here to help.
