From Struggles to Success: Margie’s Transformation Journey
Share
Margie’s story is one of incredible resilience, determination, and transformation. Once grappling with severe drug dependency, a long criminal history, and low self-esteem, Margie’s life seemed to be a continuous cycle of challenges. However, with the right support provided through programs like the Opportunity Pathways Social Impact Investment Program and Disability Employment Services (DES), Margie has turned her life around in a remarkable way.
Initially, Margie struggled to maintain her commitments with the services that were available to her. She would miss scheduled appointments, only occasionally dropping in to see her caseworker for small requests like phone credit. However, even in these fleeting visits, Margie found encouragement and consistent support from her caseworker, who always sought to guide her without judgment.
Real progress began when Margie decided to take small but meaningful steps towards self-improvement. With the constant support of the Opportunity Pathways program, she gained several qualifications, including a White Card, RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol certification), and Traffic Control Ticket. These achievements not only boosted her self-confidence but also opened the door to new opportunities.
After six months of regular appointments and intensive support, Margie felt ready to enter the workforce. Armed with her updated résumé, she visited a local hotel to enquire about bar work. Her bravery and determination paid off—she secured a trial shift and was eventually offered consistent hours. Now, after three months of steady employment, Margie is thriving in her role, supported by staff who continually reinforce her self-belief and ability to stay drug-free.
Margie has also achieved an important milestone in maintaining her independence—successfully renting her own flat since early last year. She’s now pursuing driving lessons with the hope of purchasing her first car. Reflecting on her progress, Margie recently shared, “I ran into someone I used to use drugs with, and I just thought how lucky I am that I’m not that person anymore. I have no desire to go back there.”
Transforming Lives through Community Support
Margie’s success story was made possible through the combined efforts of Opportunity Pathways Social Impact Investment Program and Disability Employment Services (DES):
- Opportunity Pathways is a programme designed to support individuals in social housing by offering assistance with education, training, employment, and community engagement. Its ultimate goal is to empower clients to transition into independent living.
- Disability Employment Services (DES), funded by the Australian Government, helps individuals with disabilities or health conditions secure and sustain employment. From résumé writing and skills development to identifying strengths and capabilities, DES offers tailored support at every step.
BEST Employment, as a registered provider of DES, played a crucial role in working alongside Margie to identify her strengths and build her confidence in finding meaningful work.
